Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
