A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
